Originally, the first three clans were not allowed to intermarry, because they were subdivisions of one original clan. In the beginning, then, there were only two clans. The later groups should not be called clans but rather phratries, on the model of the Greek groups. In addition to the division into two primeval clans, which we find split up into six daughter clans, there is a division into marriage classes. Each of the primeval clans consists of four marriage classes. There are eight in all, divided by sex—four male and four female:
